COVID Benefit Expansions
The Expansion of Unemployment Benefits
Under Michigan Executive Order 20.24 by Governor Whitmer, Unemployment benefits have been expanded to allow for a claim to be filed within 28 days of one's last day worked, to suspend certain restrictions and exceptions, and to be granted to people under the following qualifications:
The Expansion of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
Each employee can apply to take up to twelve weeks of unpaid leave, under which they would still be eligible for unemployment benefits. The qualifications for this version of FMLA are as follows:

- those quarantined due to being immunocompromised
- those displaying symptoms of covid-19
- those who have be in contact with a confirmed diagnosis in last 14 days
- those caring for someone with a confirmed diagnosis
- those taking care of a dependent family care responsibility
The Expansion of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
Each employee can apply to take up to twelve weeks of unpaid leave, under which they would still be eligible for unemployment benefits. The qualifications for this version of FMLA are as follows:
- in order to quarantine due to exposure to COVID-19
- in order to quarantine due to exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19
- in order to care for a family member who is exposed or exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19
- in order to care for a child under the age of 18 whose school or child-care was closed due to the emergency
